Although the event was not open to the public, it marked a significant moment for the F&B industry. This was the ninth edition of Asia’s 50 Best Bars, the regional version of World’s Best Bar, highlighting the region’s vibrant cocktail culture. Hong Kong secured the top spot for the fourth year in a row, and had nine bars in the Top 50.

In 2021, 2022, and 2023, Coa topped the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list, but there is a new winner this year!

cocktails from bar leone hong kong

Bar Leone has supplanted Coa as Asia’s Best Bar. Opened in mid-2023 in Central, this is the first solo venture by Lorenzo Antinori. Bar Leone offers a blend of speed, consistency, and simplicity. Signature drinks like the pre-batched Leone martini and the locally twisted yuzu gimlet highlight its innovative approach. Celebrating its first birthday in the best way possible, Bar Leone takes the top spot in this year’s rankings.

The top three bars also include Zest in Seoul at No.2 and Jigger & Pony in Singapore at No.3. These establishments represent the pinnacle of the Asian bar scene, setting high standards for excellence and creativity.

In addition to Bar Leone’s remarkable achievement, several other top-ranked bars from Hong Kong have secured spots in this year’s prestigious list, showcasing the city’s thriving cocktail scene:

Hong Kong’s First Ball Pit Cocktail Bar Open in Central https://thehkhub.com/dive-into-hong-kongs-first-ball-pit-cocktail-bar/ Mon, 27 May 2024 00:19:33 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=62728 Hong Kong is out to prove that ball pits are not just for kids with the launch of the city’s first ball pit cocktail bar. GlowBall, which has a 700 square feet ball pit with more than 750,000 balls, is open from Tuesday to Saturday for the next six months at Hilltop Plaza in Central. The venue is only open to patrons over 18 years old.

The new evenings-only venue has LED lights, thumping music, and a guest DJ on Fridays and Saturdays. The drinks menu includes innovative cocktails like the Guava Boba G&T and Murder in the Ball Pit with LED light ‘ice cubes’, as well as wine and prosecco by the glass and seasonal beers. If you’d rather dive into the ball pit sober, take your pick from non-alcoholic drinks like apple iced teas, cold brew coffee and mango boba.

Tickets for one-hour or 90-minute sessions at GlowBall are available on Eventbrite and are priced between HK$98 and HK$188, depending on the day, time, and length of your visit. There are only 30 guests allowed per session, so the organisers recommend that you make a reservation as walk-in slots are limited. And if you’re worried about hygiene, GlowBall says they will disinfect the balls every day and clean the pit once a week.

OZONE — West Kowloon

OZONE lands on many a Hong Kong bucket list, and it’s easy to see why: Taking a swift lift ride 118 floors over the city? Check. Having a drink 1,608 feet above sea level? Check. Taking memorable photos from one of the highest bars in the world? Check. We can already see the hashtags filling your social feeds. You will inevitably end up here during your time in Hong Kong, and you won’t regret it. The prices are notoriously high, so we’d suggest going early and enjoying the happy hour offers. (Please note that this terrace is — thankfully as it’s a long way up — mostly enclosed.)

Atop the swanky Murray Hotel, Popinjays’ chic ambience greets you from the moment you step out of the lift that opens onto the rooftop. A wraparound bar is the focal point, as is Central’s skyline, which keeps you company as you settle in for some very good imbibing courtesy of head mixologist Manuel Saavedra-Ramirez. Cocktails here have an aviary theme (popinjays, an old term for parrots, takes its name from the resident cockatoos in the neighbourhood) and you’ll be hard-pressed not to spot someone drinking out of a macaw’s head.

Is it just us, or does ordering a drink from an illuminated bar make waiting for your turn a little less irritating? If you can’t decide, put your faith in SKYE’s expert mixologists, who’ll whip up a bespoke cocktail that is as visually enticing (some come brimming with dry ice) as it is delicious. Sugar is one of our go-tos for outdoor drinking, as it offers a different change of pace, and outlook, from Taikoo Shing. Ko — who is the beverage manager of Cordis, Hong Kong — was crowned the World Bartender of The Year 2023, and won the Cocktail of The Year — Low ABV and Best Sensory Skill awards.

The four-day event, which was organised by the International Bartenders Association in Rome, saw Ko compete against mixologists from 67 countries around the world and become the only contestant to win three top awards this year.

Ko, the chief mixologist of Alibi — Wine Dine Be Social, impressed the judges with his cocktail inspired by Yuen Yueng — the classic Hong Kong drink that combines coffee and milk tea — and to secure the Cocktail of the Year Award in the Low ABV category. He was also recognised for this outstanding ability to engage all the senses and create a truly immersive and unforgettable experience for cocktail enthusiasts, and therefore awarded the Best Sensory Skill Award.

The World Bartender of The Year 2023 is awarded in two categories: Classic and Flair. While Ko took home the Classic award, Roman Zapata from Argentina won in the Flair category. The Cocktail of the Year is also awarded in the Before Dinner, Long Drink, Sparkling, and After Dinner categories, as well as Low ABV.

100 Hong Kong Cha Chan Tengs Will Give Away 10,000 Free Cups Of Milk Tea This November https://thehkhub.com/100-hong-kong-cha-chan-tengs-will-give-away-10000-free-cups-of-milk-tea-this-november/ Wed, 08 Nov 2023 07:07:56 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=59149 Hong Kong-style milk tea is one of the most iconic beverages in the city, which is why Hong Kong Milk Tea Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of November every year. This month, evaporated milk brand Black & White is collaborating with 100 cha chaan tengs across the SAR to give away 10,000 free cups of milk tea on weekdays this November.

The participating cha chaan tengs — which include local favourites such as Wah Nam Sing Butt in Sham Shui Po and Kam Wah Café in Prince Edward — will give away steaming hot cuppas from Monday to Friday until November 30 at various times between 9.30am and 3pm on specific days.

The technique of making Hong Kong milk tea is recognised as one of the city’s intangible cultural heritages (© chpua via Canva)

Hong Kong milk tea is made by combining Ceylon black tea with either evaporated milk or condensed milk instead of traditional milk, and is usually had with breakfast or lunch at a diner called a cha chaan teng, or open-air stalls known as dai pai dongs. It is also called “silk-stocking milk tea” because the sack cloth bag used to filter the tea gradually becomes an intense brown after repeated use.

The technique of making Hong Kong milk tea — which involves several steps and specific equipment — is recognised as one of the intangible cultural heritages of Hong Kong. The tea can be served hot, with ice cubes, or in a cup nestled among ice cubes (called ice bath milk tea).

Local illustrator Bonnie Pang has teamed up with Black & White to create a limited-edition zodiac milk tea cup and saucer set with a Year of the Dragon theme. Order a cup of tea at any of the participating cha chaan tengs to receive a special stamp. Collect eight of these stamps, register via WhatsApp on +852 9842 3837, and then purchase the set for $88.

For more information about the giveaway, visit the Black & White Facebook page or check this schedule.

This New Hong Kong Café Allows Customers To Drink Coffee Inside Victoria Prison’s Old Jail Cells https://thehkhub.com/this-new-hong-kong-cafe-allows-customers-to-drink-coffee-inside-victoria-prisons-old-jail-cells/ Wed, 08 Nov 2023 04:13:33 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=59143 On The Hill Coffee Bar has opened a new branch located inside a block of the former Victoria Prison at Tai Kwun. Instead of traditional table seating, this coffee shop on the ground floor of E Hall has metal stools and benches inside old jail cells, where customers can sip on their coffee.

Patrons enter through a narrow hall with stark white interiors and can place their orders for coffee and the cake of the day with the staff, who also work out of a repurposed prison cell. The café has retained the cell bars, which are painted black, and each cell is interconnected so that visitors can walk through them.

On The Hill’s signature caffeine offerings include their espresso-and-coconut milk concoction called the AmeriCOCO, and Thai Dirty — a mix of condensed milk, espresso, and milk poured so that the layers are distinct. The café will soon expand its menu to include bread and light snacks.

E Hall is a three-storey building located in front of the old prison yard, next to the modern J Cube and adjacent to D Hall. It was completed in 1915 and its design is similar to that of Victoria Prison’s B Hall. The prison — along with the former Central Police Station and the Former Central Magistracy — is part of Tai Kwun’s 16-building complex that is among Hong Kong’s protected heritage buildings.

Tai Kwun also conducts guided tours of the complex premises in English, Cantonese and Putonghua, as well as a Hidden Spaces tour of locations in the complex that are usually off-limits to visitors.

On The Hill has three other locations across Hong Kong — in North Point, Ngau Tau Kok, and Kwun Tong, the last of which opened in June this year. The coffee shop brand also had a branch in To Kwa Wan, which closed at the end of October.

Coa & Argo Rank High In World’s 50 Best Bars 2023, Landing At No. 20 And No. 34 https://thehkhub.com/hong-kongs-coa-argo-among-worlds-50-best-bars-for-2023/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 15:30:19 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=58721 Two of Hong Kong’s most happening night spots are included in the 2023 World’s 50 Best Bars rankings. The list, which was announced in Singapore on Tuesday night, featured Coa at No. 20, and Argo at No. 34. The world’s best bar this year is Sips in Barcelona, while the city with the highest representation on the list is London with five entries.

Other Asian cities that featured in this year’s edition of the list included Singapore with three bars, Bangkok and Tokyo with two venues each, and Seoul with one. While Coa took the top spot at the 2023 Asia’s 50 Best Bars ceremony held earlier in 2023 for a record-breaking third consecutive year, Bangkok’s BKK Social Club was the highest-ranking Asian bar on the international list, coming in at No. 13.

Last week, it was revealed that two Hong Kong bars found places in the 51-100 rankings of the World’s Best Bars for 2023 — Penicillin (No. 71) and DarkSide (No. 97) — giving the city a total of four bars in this year’s Top 100 list. This is an improvement in Hong Kong’s overall representation, as the city had three establishments in the list last year.

The rankings are arrived at through a voting process by The World’s 50 Best Bars Academy, which includes 680 beverage experts from 28 regions across the world, comprising bartenders, consultants, writers, and cocktail specialists. Each member casts seven votes based on their bar experiences over the preceding 18 months.

50 Best is touted as the leading authority in the international drinks scene and global gastronomy, with a 20-year history of highlighting worldwide trends and the top restaurants and bars from across the globe. In April, it announced the 50 Best Restaurants for 2023, which featured legendary Hong Kong-based Cantonese restaurant The Chairman in the No. 50 spot. In addition, two Hong Kong hotels made it to the first-ever World’s 50 Best Hotels list: Rosewood (No. 2) and The Upper House (No. 4).

The World’s 50 Best Bars for 2023 will be announced in Singapore on October 17. Last year, two Hong Kong establishments made it to the top 50: Coa (No. 17) and Argo (No. 28), which was a new entry on the list.

Each member casts seven votes based on their bar experiences over the preceding 18 months.

This relatively new entrant on the city’s bar scene has generated a lot of buzz for its theme — a speakeasy inspired by Hong Kong’s social distancing restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic that saw restaurants close at 6pm, and bars shut down for months altogether. The entrance to the venue is marked by a toilet on Hollywood Road, a nod to the hard times that the city’s F&B industry faced between 2020 and 2022. The cocktail menu of this intimate 30-seater features around 25 handcrafted concoctions divided into three categories: Experimental, Vintage, and Remastered Classics.

Mizunara: The Library, which is among the top 100 best bars in Asia for 2023, is modelled on a Ginza whiskey bar. Its sophisticated interiors — think plush leather seating, a Japanese garden, and an imported wood bar — are a stark contrast to its nondescript entrance in an uncharacteristically quiet corner of Wan Chai. Once you take the elevator up to the fourth floor, settle down and take in Mizunara’s 700-plus stock of whiskey imported from India, Taiwan, Japan, and Scotland. And if you want to jeuje up your experience, make sure you’re here before 8pm to get in on an omakase tasting session.

We’d recommend PDT for a classy date night or special celebration, with a food menu curated by the Mandarin’s head chef. To find the entrance, you may want to look for a quiet place on the mezzanine level of the hotel to make a phone call.

The iconic 001 — billed as Hong Kong’s first speakeasy — closed at its long-time subterranean location on Graham Street and recently reopened at new digs above Tai Kwun. It’s a hard-to-find spot as its doors look almost exactly the same as the historic prison’s original doors, and only visitors with a keen eye will be able to quickly spot the vintage doorbell on 001’s entrance that distinguish it from the other doorways. The drinks are curated by Sky Huo, one of 001’s original bartenders from its initial opening 12 years ago, and feature in a seasonal-changing menu.

We’d recommend getting there early as tables fill up quickly — visit, and you’ll know why! If you’d like to find the gintonería the organic way, look for a bright red door on Second Street that may seem ‘off limits’.

Stockton

Know a whiskey lover? Treat them well with a trip to Stockton, where each drink is crafted to perfection each night. Aside from fine whiskey, Stockton’s cocktails take us back to the Neolithic era with everything from Avocado Liqueur to Ghee-infused Tanquerey (we’ve never heard of that, either). But don’t be mistaken, there’s nothing primitive about the time and craftsmanship behind each drink at Stockton, so make sure to visit for an unforgettable speakeasy experience. On the corner of Wyndham Street and Glenealy, go into the dark hallway by the barber shop that’s least likely to lead to something interesting — you’ll be rewarded for your curiosity.

Combine dinner and drinks at Hugger Mugger, the speakeasy that sits in front of Pirata Group’s renowned Indian-style Chaiwala restaurant in Central. You’d definitely walk past the entrance on Wyndham Street if you weren’t looking for it — the colourblock entrance bears little evidence of the bar behind it except for a subtle sign and the numbers 43-55. The bar transports you back in time to British India, with the salon creating cocktails with eclectic drinks inspired by Pink Floyd, Shakespeare, and other British cultural greats.

The Pottinger’s walk-in speakeasy offers a fun twist on the hotel experience. Simply pick up your keycard from The Reception on the third floor, and tap the card to access Room 309. We’ve enjoyed their ‘invisible menu’, where the bartenders create clear cocktails so that your preconceptions about colour and flavour don’t influence your tasting experience. This is an intimate location and perfect for date nights and catch-ups with friends.
