Hong Kong Sevens Set To Sell Out For First Time Since Pandemic, With Under 500 Tickets Left https://thehkhub.com/hong-kong-sevens-to-sell-out-for-first-time-since-pandemic-with-under-500-tickets-left/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 05:32:41 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=61996 The 2024 edition of the Hong Kong Sevens is expected to sell out, with less than 500 tickets available for the tournament that will take place from April 5-7. The event, which is one of the biggest on the city’s sports calendar, will take place at the Hong Kong Stadium for the last time this year as it will move to the 50,000-capacity main stadium at Kai Tak Sports Park in 2025.

This will be the first year since the pandemic that the tournament will sell out, with overseas spectators accounting for more than 40% of ticket sales, as opposed to 23% in 2023 and 3% in 2022. According to the tournament organisers, there has been “strong uptake from the UK, Australia and Fiji”. In addition, there will be international entertainment and music acts, such as reggae legends The Wailers, Journey’s Arnel Pineda, DJ James Haskell, and Taiwanese cheerleading squad the Rakuten Girls.

Hong Kong music star Celine Tam and up-and-coming Cantopop girl group Lolly Talk will also perform during the tournament. In addition, the Tradition Hong Kong Football Club 10s and Kowloon RugbyFest 10s Tournaments will both play out before Friday’s Sevens kick-off. Sevens fever has also taken over the city, with more than 20 breakfasts, brunches, lunches, drinks and dinner functions being held in the city to commemorate the event.

Hong Kong’s Edgar Cheung Takes Back World No. 1 Fencing Title https://thehkhub.com/hong-kongs-edgar-cheung-takes-back-world-no-1-fencing-title/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 06:11:43 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=61475 Hong Kong fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long has regained the World No. 1 position in the men’s foil category, according to the latest International Fencing Federation rankings. Cheung was the first Hongkonger to win an Olympic gold medal in fencing at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

According to the rankings, Cheung has 200 points, placing him 10 points ahead of Italy’s Tomasso Marini. The left-handed player recently won a gold medal at the Turin Men’s Foil Grand Prix, defeating the Czech Republic’s Alexander Choupenitch.

Cheung became the first athlete from Hong Kong to ascend to the World No. 1 spot in 2022. He is a two-time Asian Championship winner, and won the World Cup in Paris in 2022. However, he is not the only fencer in the city with a No. 1 ranking — Vivian Kong is the top-ranked female epee player in the world, and is known as Hong Kong’s “queen of fencing”.

Kai Tak Sports Park With 50,000-Seat Stadium To Be Completed By 2024-End https://thehkhub.com/kai-tak-sports-park-to-be-completed-by-2024-end-in-time-for-2025-opening/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 02:41:18 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=61356 The under-construction Kai Tak Sports Park, which is set to be Hong Kong’s largest sports venue, is 85% complete. Authorities say it will be ready by the end of this year, and is on track to open in 2025. The highlight of the 28-hectare sports park is the 50,000-seat main stadium with a retractable roof, which will be the biggest stadium in the city, a distinction currently held by the 40,000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium.

On Monday, Kai Tak Sports Park officials revealed that the exterior building façade panels of the main stadium are complete, which they say is a “significant milestone” in the venue’s construction. The main stadium is designed with the theme ‘Pearl of the Orient’, and its surface has about 27,000 aluminium panels, each shaped into signature design triangular pieces.

The colours of the façade will shift between mountain blue, metallic purple, metallic silver and other colours, depending on the natural lighting conditions. The exterior of the stadium also has more than 7,000 LED lights to create visual effects, and the panels are self-cleaning to reduce the impact of dust and rainwater on the exterior walls.

Apart from the main stadium, Kai Tak Sports Park will also have an indoor sports centre that can accommodate 10,000 spectators and a public sports ground with 5,000 seats. Once the sports park opens next year, it will be ground zero for prestigious events like the Hong Kong Sevens and the 15th National Games, which is being co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau. The venue will also house several open public spaces for events and leisure, as well as retail and harbourfront dining spaces.

Inter Miami Ticket Holders In Hong Kong To Get 50% Refund https://thehkhub.com/inter-miami-ticket-holders-in-hong-kong-to-get-50-refund/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 07:26:37 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=61280 Tatler Asia, the organisers of the controversial Inter Miami-Hong Kong XI match at which star player Lionel Messi and his teammate Luis Suárez did not play on Sunday, have reassured ticket holders that they will get a 50% refund. The organisers also expressed disappointment over Messi and Luis Suárez playing in their match in Tokyo later in the week, saying it felt like “another slap in the face” to Hong Kong fans.

In an Instagram post on Friday, Tatler Asia explained that four players — Messi, Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets — were contractually obliged to play in the game for at least 45 minutes unless they were injured. It turned out that Messi and Suárez needed to sit the match out as they were deemed medically unfit. “When we learned that Messi would not be playing, we pleaded with Inter Miami CF ownership and management to urge him to stand up, engage with the spectators and explain why he couldn’t play. He didn’t,” said Tatler officials.

Tatler Asia revealed they have been working with the government and the Consumer Council to resolve the issue: “We will not escape our responsibility as organisers and that is why Tatler Asia will offer all those who purchased match-day tickets from the official channels a 50% refund. Details about the refund process will be provided in a separate communication by mid-March.”

Last year, it was revealed that Inter Miami would play in Hong Kong as part of their first international tour, and that tickets would cost between HK$880 and HK$4,880. The friendly match in Hong Kong was the first city announced on the American club’s 2024 pre-season tour line-up, and the management later announced that the team would play in El Salvador, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Australia. The team also had a training session in Hong Kong the day before the scheduled exhibition match, which Messi took part in.

As of Friday afternoon, the Consumer Council has received 1,303 complaints about the match amounting to a total of HK$8,921,161. The biggest complaint involves an amount of HK$82,960. Earlier this week, Tatler Asia withdrew its application for HK$16 million in funds from the government for the match, and Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said that the government is working to create backup plans so that the public gets all the information they need before they attend future big-ticket events.

Messi addressed the Hong Kong controversy at a press conference in Japan, calling it “bad luck” that he could not join his team members on the pitch and adding that he hoped to be able to return to the city to play here. Inter Miami has also apologised for Messi’s absence from the Hong Kong match. “Despite our best intentions, we understand there has been disappointment over the absence of Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez in Sunday’s match and we are sorry that the two players could not participate,” the club said in a statement sent to Reuters.

Messi Hong Kong Match Gets Complaints Totalling HK$1.6 Million https://thehkhub.com/messi-hong-kong-match-gets-complaints-totalling-hk1-6-million/ Tue, 06 Feb 2024 03:42:14 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=61184 Hong Kong football fans who attended Sunday’s Inter Miami-Hong Kong XI exhibition match on Sunday were disappointed when the event’s star player Lionel Messi did not play because he was injured. The outcry over the match has not died down, with the city’s Consumer Council revealing that it received 245 complaints totalling HK$1,608,662. The highest complaint registered with the council amounted to HK$22,690.

While Messi participated in the training session the day before the friendly game, he did not make an appearance on the pitch on match day. In a statement, Tatler Asia, the organisers of the event, maintained they did not know that Messi and his teammate Luis Suárez would not make it to the pitch, and that the players were “deemed unfit to play by their team’s medical department”.

Consumer Council officials state that even though Tatler Asia did not guarantee that specific players would play in the match, they also failed to explain that team members would sit out the game in case they were injured. “Most of the promotional materials are mainly based on photos of individual players, and the organiser’s promotional publications have always stated that the team will be led by individual players. Consumers have reasonable expectations for these players to participate in exhibition games,” according to a statement from the council.

The government has also expressed disappointment about the event, with Kevin Yeung, the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, revealing that Messi was supposed to play for at least 45 minutes — “subject to fitness and safety considerations” — and that the organisers assured officials that he would join his team in the second half of the match.

“We reiterated our request for Messi to play in the match about 10 minutes before the match ended. The organiser [then] confirmed that Messi could not play. We requested them to explore other remedies, such as Messi appearing on the field to interact with his fans, and receiving the trophy. Unfortunately, as you all see, these did not work out,” Yueng told the media on Monday.

Following these developments, Tatler Asia withdrew its application for HK$16 million in funds from the government for the event. However, Tatler Asia CEO Michel Lamuniere explained that Messi and Suárez were listed as substitutes in the official team line-up, and were therefore fit to play. However, the organisers were informed at half-time that Messi would not play, and they urged Inter Miami to ask Messi to address fans at the stadium, which the eight-time Ballon D’Or winner did not do.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee addressed the “saga” at a press conference on Tuesday, saying, “We will keep urging the organisers to explain to the public in detail what actually happened [and] what were the details of the agreement between them and the team. The organisers have the responsibility to explain and to answer to the demands of those who have bought tickets.” Lee added that the government is working on creating backup plans for the future so that the public gets all the information they need before they attend big-ticket events.

There is now much anticipation over whether Messi will play at Inter Miami’s next pre-season match in Japan, which is slated for February 7, during which the team will face off against Vissel Kobe at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo.

These powerhouses join previously announced players — hometown hero Coleman Wong, rising mainland star Shang Juncheng, and World Top 50 ranked player Mackenzie McDonald — as ATP Tour tennis returns to Hong Kong bigger and better than ever from 31 December 2023 to 7 January 2024 at Victoria Park Tennis Stadium.

With BOCHKTO 2024 enjoying pride of place as one of the events in the opening week of the global ATP 2024 Season, more players will be announced in the coming days as some of the game’s top stars prepare for the first Grand Slam of the season at the Australian Open beginning a fortnight after Hong Kong.

Today’s announcement sees some leading lights of global tennis lining up to welcome the return of ATP Tour excitement to Hong Kong. Several of the players confirmed today are Grand Slam or ATP Masters 1000 winners or have already been ranked inside the world’s top 10 in their illustrious careers, including Andrey Rublev, who enters BOCHKTO 2024 as the highest ranked player in the tournament at fifth in the world currently.

Rublev has won an impressive 14 ATP Tour singles titles and claimed his first ATP Masters 1000 singles victory at the Monte Carlo Masters in 2023. He has appeared in eight Grand Slam quarter-finals since 2020, and reached the last eight this year at the Australian Open, the US Open, and for the first time ever at Wimbledon, before losing to Novak Djokovic. He also won the Swedish Open in 2023, defeating Casper Ruud in the final. The 26 year-old also reached his second Masters 1000 singles final of the year in Shanghai, losing to No.16 seed Hubert Hurkacz and advanced to finals in Dubai, Halle, and Banja Luka.

BOCHKTO 2024 also welcomes world No. 15 Karen Khachanov, who has won five ATP Tour singles titles, including a Masters 1000 crown in Paris in 2018; Frances Tiafoe, who cracked the world’s top ten earlier this year after winning the third ATP singles title of his career in June; and Marin Cilic, who has won 20 ATP Tour singles titles, including a major at the 2014 US Open.

In keeping with HKCTA’s mission to connect the entire community, the BOCHKTO 2024 Tournament Village will offer fun activities for everyone, and is free to enter throughout the tournament. With a giant screen broadcasting the live centre court action, prizes and giveaways, tennis themed games and activities, a mini-tennis court, shopping and more, the village is the place to be for tennis fans and the general public alike, and a great spot to ring in 2024 with a ball.

Throughout the tournament, fans can enjoy photo ops and interactive tennis games at BOCHK’s booth in the village. ATP star players will also visit the booth during the week to meet and sign autographs for fans, allowing the public to cheer on the stars in person.

With local star Coleman Wong already announced in the field, the village will also serve as a rallying point for fans to cheer on their hometown heroes in the Hong Kong Booth. The booth also features Hong Kong themed souvenirs and merchandise, and even art exhibits sharing the unique and vibrant culture of the city with residents and tourists from around the world.
