Hong Kong fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long has regained the World No. 1 position in the men’s foil category, according to the latest International Fencing Federation rankings. Cheung was the first Hongkonger to win an Olympic gold medal in fencing at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
According to the rankings, Cheung has 200 points, placing him 10 points ahead of Italy’s Tomasso Marini. The left-handed player recently won a gold medal at the Turin Men’s Foil Grand Prix, defeating the Czech Republic’s Alexander Choupenitch.
Cheung became the first athlete from Hong Kong to ascend to the World No. 1 spot in 2022. He is a two-time Asian Championship winner, and won the World Cup in Paris in 2022. However, he is not the only fencer in the city with a No. 1 ranking — Vivian Kong is the top-ranked female epee player in the world, and is known as Hong Kong’s “queen of fencing”.
