The skies over Victoria Harbour will light up once again this month, courtesy the first of Hong Kong’s monthly drone shows. The 10-minute-long display will begin at 8 pm on May 11 in front of the Wan Chai Temporary Promenade. The show will mark two major festivals on the city’s cultural calendar: the Cheung Chau Bun Festival (May 5-16) and Buddha’s Birthday (May 15).
Last week, the Hong Kong Tourism Board organised the city’s first-ever Labour Day fireworks show, which revolved around a gold theme and was combined with the A Symphony of Lights light-and-laser show. The 10-minute display took place at the East Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, and featured images such as an HK monogram and a smiley face. There were concerns over whether the show would take place due to thunderstorms and rain, but authorities announced that it would go ahead after the weather cleared.
There are more fireworks and drone shows slated for next month at the Wan Chai Temporary Promenade to commemorate the Dragon Boat Festival. The drone show will be held on June 10, while the fireworks show will take place on June 15. Both events will begin at 8pm. The Hong Kong government has previously organised drone shows for occasions like last year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, when 800 drones illuminated the night sky with patterns like the ‘Jade Rabbit and the Moon’ and Cantonese opera motifs.
